President Joe Biden handed over power to Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday for a short period of time while he was anesthetized for a routine colonoscopy, the White House said.
The temporary transfer of power to Harris made her the first acting president in US history. Biden resumed his role as president until noon, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
Psaki noted in a press statement that the same process followed in 2002 and 2007, when then President George W. Bush underwent the same medical procedure.
